How to Fundraise

You got this!

To start, every walker in HPW starts with a preset $250 fundraising goal. That's an amount that will make a notable impact for the local charity you are walking for but of course, you can edit it. Most people reach it by asking just a handful of people to help.

The Bandana Milestone >

As a thank you for your impact, you’ll earn the official Hard Place Walk Bandana once you raise $150 (Adults) or $75 (Youth). The beautiful HPW bandanas are a visible symbol of your commitment and will be ready for you at check-in on event day!

Enough chatter - let's get to the fundraising!

Step 1

Set up Your Fundraising Page

Your personal FundHub page is where donors come to give so make it yours.

  • Say cheese. Add a smiling photo of you, a short “why I’m walking” message that explains your reasons for doing this (2 to 3 sentences is plenty), and of course your $250 goal - or whatever you set.
  • Make it personal. People love giving to people they know.
  • Pro Tip: Consider kicking off your campaign with a self-donation or pledge.
Step 2

Write Your Fundraising Email

A great fundraising email is honest and simple and sometimes has bad spelling!

A good email doesn't have to be perfect. Just make it:

  • Direct: “I’m emailing to ask for your support for my Hard Place Walk…”
  • Short: 4–6 sentences beats a long essay.
  • Personal: Why this matters to you and who it helps.
  • Linked: Paste your FundHub page link into it so they can click and give in response.
Step 3

Use Get5 To Build Your List

Focus on getting five donors. Ignore your goal and just start with five people you know who will cheer you on. That’s the Get5 strategy.

Think: Who Knows Me?

  • family (parents, siblings, grandparents),
  • friends (close pals, teammates, colleagues),
  • community (neighbours, coach, teacher, faith/community contacts).

Ask the obvious cheerleaders who love you first and then keep going.

Step 4

Ask Personally

Make sure you ask personally. Where at all possible send individual emails or texts. Why? Because people respond to personal notes better. They are hard to ignore.

Copy and paste your core message, then tweak the opening line and one detail so it feels truly for them. Follow up kindly a week later if you have not heard back.

Step 5

Say Thank You (right away)

Try to reply with a quick thank-you by email/text (or gasp, even a short call) as soon as you can after your friend gives to you. They'll love reading or hearing your words of thanks.

Gratitude builds momentum so keep pushing towards your goal of $250 goal.
